We all love to watch sports. For some reason, the celebration of the capabilities of the human body brings people of all different walks of life together. However, while these sporting events can be very joyous, they can oftentimes be tainted by unfairness and injustice. This article aims to explore some of the ways in which justice is being cheated in sports.
While it would be nice to think that everything in sports is pure and fair competition, it is not. Oftentimes, the greed and the prospect of money based on outcomes is involved. This often happens at the core or head of an organization where some of the big decisions of the professional future of that sport. For example, some of the head officials of FIFA (the international soccer organization responsible for running the world cup) were exposed for taking monetary bribes in order to alter the details of the World Cup. This is clearly an injustice. What is also unjust about this is that there is too much power placed at the head of an organization like this. When there is too much power at the head of an organization, there is too much temptation for villains and criminals to try to target those heads with bribes and the like to negatively alter the future of the sport.
In addition to heads of organizations being corrupt, referees are also bribed to throw the outcome of a game. This is also unjust because it makes the game unfair. There should be more rules and screening processes in place to make sure that this stops happening.
The court is a place where justice is supposed to be served. Since ancient times, citizens have brought their quarrels and issues to a court of some sort. Whether the verdict ruler was a king, a jury, or a judge, justice would be served to the highest extent. The courts in our country have been modeled with this ideal in mind. However, something has run amok and justice is no longer being served in the courts.
Racism in our justice system
One of the main issues in our justice system is racism. Some may think that this is not an issue because everybody gets due process. However, this is not always true. For example, a lot of upper class white criminals can pay for the best lawyers, allowances, and even sentence breaks. Meanwhile, lower class and middle class (and sometimes even upper class) criminals who are also persons of color will not be able to get the same treatment. This is clearly unjust and an example of racism in our justice system.
Additionally, persons of color are often dealt with more harshly in the court than their white counterparts. For example, studies and statistics show that with the same kind of crime, persons of color are found to be guilty more often than whites. Additionally, further studies show that juries will give criminals who are persons of color stricter sentences than whites for the same kinds of crimes. This is clearly an example of racism and injustice in our courts and needs to be stopped.
There are times when injustice is being done in areas about which we are not informed. For example, there is injustice in copyright law. While this may seem like an obscure field, copyright law happens to have a huge impact on the inventions and progress that is made in technology today. Without copyright law, intellectual property and companies would be completely undermined, leading to a much more unfairly competitive and dishonest society. This article looks at some of the ways that justice is being cheated in copyright law.
One of the main parts of copyright law is obtaining a patent. This means that you have certification that you have the intellectual property over an invention, an idea, or even a song. While some people come up with amazing ideas originally, others can make a fortune off of stolen ideas. Patents are supposed to protect people from that. However, sometimes bribing is put into place with patent applications, tempting the patent attorneys to be corrupt and also threatening the moral foundation of the justice of intellectual property. This happens more often than many would like to admit. The worst part about this injustice is that some of these may have a huge negative impact on society, and that is something we do not want.
The other injustice in copyright law is that copyrights are being improperly sold to the public. There are people with incredible ideas looking for patents and copyrights. The problem is that they can get duped by charlatan attorneys just looking to make money and steal the ideas for themselves.
One of the worst things that a government can do to its people is take away their right to vote. However, did you know that this his happening right in our very nation? Yes, I can hardly believe it either. Nevertheless, this is happening on a daily basis in many states. How is it happening? This injustice is happening through the identification requirements for voting.
Racism in voting
It’s hard to fathom that our own government is being racist in the voting process, but it’s true. This mainly happens through ID requirements that voters must go through in order to vote. However, studies have shown that many people of color are not able to get the proper ID or show the proper ID in order to vote. This results in many people of color not being able to vote in elections that are occurring nationwide. This is a gross injustice. Think about it–many people of color are getting denied their right to have their voice heard through voting for the candidate that they view to be fit for office.
Most of these ID laws preventing people of color from voting are put in place in order to avoid voter fraud. However, studies have shown that this is an incredibly small problem in our country and has never even affected an election. The worst part about this is that many legislators who vote behind closed doors commit voter fraud all of the time. This unfairness is clearly an injustice in our system and must be stopped.
If you have been watching the news, you will know that Justice Antonin Scalia died this past weekend at his home in Texas. While it is sad to see a brilliant mind like this go, we must look forward and see what Justice Scalia’s Death means for the future of the Supreme Court.
CHANGE ON THE RISE
One of the things that Justice Scalia was well known for was his conservative nature when voting on the bench during his service in the Supreme Court. For example, Scalia Voted against the constitutionality of President Barack Obama’s healthcare plan. In addition, he voted against making gay marriage legal in the United States this past June. Now that Scalia is no longer with us, the Supreme Court has the opportunity to appoint a justice who could completely change the turnout of the nine votes from the bench. This could in turn have a huge impact on the future decisions that the Supreme Court makes.
Because the prospect of a new justice is so significant, we need to urge our nation’s government to make sure that justice is well served in the Supreme Court. If they are not careful, they could choose someone to take Scalia’s place that will inhibit the progress of our nation and impede justice. This is definitely something that we would not want. Therefore, we should make our voices heard through as many outlets as awe can: internet, paper, and in person. In this way, we can let our nation’s politicians know that we care about who is replacing Judge Scalia. We will also let our nation’s government know how much we care about justice.
Throughout the country, students in all forms of school must participate in standardized testing. This is done in order to aggregate and compare the performances of students nationwide. While this is a good way of measuring the progress of students, it is an inaccurate and unjust way to compare students due to several reasons.
STANDARDIZED TESTING CAUSES INJUSTICE DUE TO ECONOMIC DISPARITY
While standardized testing may work to compare students of one demographic within a certain community, it does not translate across communities. For example, many middle class communities that are predominantly Caucasian (white) tend to have moderate to high standardized test scores because of the high quality of schools and the ability to afford tutors and online self-help programs. However, these resources are not necessarily available to students and families in more economically stressed communities that consist of minorities. As a result, students in these communities (such as in inner urban areas) tend to earn lower test scores. However, on a scale of standardization, these disadvantaged students are compared side by side with privileged students. This is an injustice because these two demographics are simply not comparable. The worst part about this injustice is that oftentimes standardized testing (particularly in the high school realm) can dictate the academic future of many students. For example, many universities admit or deny based on standardized test scores. They even award financial aid in the form of merit scholarships to students who are high achievers in standardized tests. While this can reward hard working and talented students, it can also have negative effects on student who have not had the opportunity to have the same caliber of education as privileged students. This is an injustice and needs reform.
There is an alarming disparity between the rich and the middle class in our country. In fact, the middle class is collapsing. Did you know that most of our nation’s money and income earned belongs to the top one percent of the country’s socioeconomic strata? This is completely unacceptable and in fact downright unjust.
LARGE CORPORATIONS ARE CHEATING THE MIDDLE CLASS
One of the ways that the middle class is being treated unjustly is through the large corporations and CEOs dominating the majority of income and wealth in our country. Oftentimes, the chief executive officers of a Fortune 500 company will allow themselves to have large bonuses totaling millions of dollars. For example, last year, the top executives at Goldman Sachs made hundreds of millions of dollars for their yearly salary, while some of the employees who were lower on the company ladder were payed very minimally with very unfair and meager benefits. This comes to a head in large companies like McDonald’s and Walmart. For example, many employees at both of these companies work for minimum wage. In most states, working forty hours a week on minimum wage will barely keep one or one’s family above the poverty level, keeping them soundly in the the lower middle class. Meanwhile, the executives and leaders of the company profit hugely off of the hard work of these honest employees. This injustice needs to be stopped. We need to find a way to make sure that large corporations are not taking advantage of middle class employees.
Every day when I wake up, I see new articles about how awful things are happening to the environment. However, it is incredible to me that while there is so much press about how unjustly the environment is being treated, there is very little progress on the front of preserving it. No matter what we are doing, it seems like the government and large money-hungry corporations are exploiting the earth.
One of the unjust things that humans are doing to the environment is the contribution to watershed degradation. While watershed degradation can happen due to a host of different causes, one of the causes is overexploitation of the land. This happens when arable land is used beyond its potential for fertility. As a result, the land begins to lose nutrients and other attributes that make the land life-giving. This ultimately becomes a contributing factor towards watershed degradation. The worst part about this is that we are totally in control. We have the ability to let go and let the land recover. However, in order to get ahead in life and try to make a buck, we end up hurting the earth through this awful method. This is unjust and unacceptable.
Another unjust thing that humans are doing to the environment is allowing oil spills to happen. Oftentimes this happens because of our recklessness. However, this can also happen because we are too greedy and oil-dependent. As a result, we are putting the earth at risk of massive pollution. This is another source of injustice towards the environment.
Today, I’ve been thinking a lot about all of the injustice being done to animals both in our nation and around the world. There are so many things that we are doing wrong as humans to the fellow creatures that are sharing the earth with us. Below are some of the ways that humans are treating animals unjustly.
DESTROYING THEIR HOMES
One of the things we humans are doing that is unjust toward animals is disregarding the environment, which in turn ends up destroying the natural habitats (read: HOMES) of many animals. Think about it! Every time we cut down trees, we take away the nest of some innocent birds or some home for insects. For example, many bees establish their hives on the branches of trees. We need to be more conscious of what we are doing to the environment so that we protect and preserve the homes of so many wild animals.
MISTREATMENT OF DOMESTIC ANIMALS
It is absolutely unbelievable how many animals who are considered to be “pets” in some person’s home are being treated unjustly. Oftentimes, these animals are not being fed properly or are not being given the proper hygienic care that they require. This leads to a deteriorating health pattern for many of these animals. This is wrong. Imagine if that pet was a human! The person in charge of caring for that individual would be arrested and then put on trial for neglect. We need to establish some accountability or raise awareness for the mistreatment of domestic animals.
Sometimes, it’s very tempting to throw in the towel and resign yourself to the notion that we will never be able to establish justice in our society. After all, so many terrible things are happening. People are killing, robbing, and committing other heinous crimes and getting away with it. Even our justice system, which is supposed to effect positive change and retribution in our society, is flawed and corrupt. This results in the unjust prevailing and injustice running rampant all over our country. However, we need to keep fighting, because justice will prevail in the end.
One of the things that we can use to give us hope is to remind ourselves that we are making progress with justice. For example, we are increasing awareness of all of the unjust things that are happening. Everyday, more and more people are learning about all of the ways that justice is being shortchanged in our society. What is more, these people are getting angry (and rightfully so!) about the injustice that exists and are wanting to do something about it. This is a huge encouragement because it shows that justice still lives in the hearts of decent people everywhere. If we can round up enough of those people, we can have a voice for justice and further our agenda, which is to promote full justice in our society.
Because there are so many people becoming aware of injustice, our side is growing in strength and in numbers. Don’t give up on justice!
